“Because I Can”How Mason Wright Found Purpose Through Pain, Ultra Runs, and Personal Evolution |
In this episode of The Health Movement Podcast, we sat down with Mason Wright — ultrarunner, former 285-pound lineman, and registered dietitian — to unpack one of the most epic transformations we’ve ever heard. Mason isn’t just a runner. He’s The Buff Runner. A guy who went from deadlifting over 800 pounds to running 421 miles across Utah — powered by discipline, grit, and a mission to support single parents. When asked why he does what he does, Mason paused and said: “Because I can.” It’s a simple answer. But behind it lies something deeper — something raw, tested, and hard-earned. From Powerlifting to PurposeMason’s journey started with football — a powerhouse athlete holding state records, weighing 285 pounds, and pursuing a future in medicine. Then a single challenge changed everything. His girlfriend (now wife) invited him to run a Spartan race with her family. Rather than brush it off, Mason leaned in. He trained, dropped 45 pounds, and crossed the finish line. He didn’t just survive — he fell in love with it. That race was the first domino in a cascade that would eventually lead Mason to become a pro Spartan racer, then an ultramarathoner, and ultimately, a man who ran across an entire state for something bigger than himself. The Run That Changed EverythingIn 2024, Mason ran 421 miles across the state of Utah — a feat that took him 9 days and 17 hours. The physical effort alone was staggering. But what made it meaningful was the why behind it: To raise money and awareness for single parents — through the Single Parent Project. He trained through severe runner’s knee, overwhelming allergies, inversion-layer air quality, and relentless setbacks. There were 20+ weeks of injuries and illness leading into the event, with barely a full month of clean training. And yet, he didn’t quit. Why? Because single parents don’t get to quit. They don’t tap out when they’re tired. They show up — every single day. “I had the choice to quit. They don’t.” You vs. YouThere’s a moment during the interview where Mason captures the essence of his mindset in just a few words: “It’s always you versus you.” And that’s exactly how he approaches everything — from nutrition coaching to physical challenges like the Ultra Murph (seven Murphs in 12 hours) to running 24 hours around a track to raise funds. He doesn’t chase perfection. He chases growth. And he’s not afraid of suffering — he embraces it. Because that’s where the change happens. “Life without pain isn’t a life worth living.” Redefining LimitsMason isn’t just breaking records — he’s breaking mindsets. The belief that you have to be one thing, fit one mold, or settle into one identity. He’s proof that you can evolve. That you can lift like a powerlifter and run like a mountain goat. That you can go from chasing reps to chasing meaning. Whether he’s training ultra runners as a registered dietitian, speaking on stage, or planning his next 30-day challenge (which he hinted will be intense), Mason keeps one thing central: challenge is a gift. Mason’s Daily ReminderHere’s the question he lives by — and encourages others to ask: “What if I just kept going?” If you’re feeling stuck, stagnant, or like your goals are slipping — take a page from Mason’s playbook. Don’t wait for perfect conditions. Start now. Push yourself. Find a deeper why. And most importantly — keep going.
